Xavier Darnai: There were a few private booths in the back bar area of the diner, the perfect place to eat without being interrupted. Following through the walk and around the bend, he took a seat across from her as he rubbed at his jaw line, undoing the button of his jacket to offer the breathing room expected of a man in a suit like his. "I'm sure. It's an odd little habit, collecting the sustenance've others." He did nothing to hide the pun, raising his brows as he reached for the pack of cigarettes hidden under his jacket. "But something tells me I can take you at your word for that. Besides, I'm not much've a sweets person." Setting the pack on the booth table, he opened it up and thumbed one of them free, taking the cigarette between his lips as the lighter was flipped out, snapped open and sparked to life. His eyes watched the flame dance as he took that first hit, exhaling slowly after as he slapped the lighter shut again, dropping it on top of the cigarettes as he held his bandaged hand out to flag down a waitress.
Obvious Illusion: "You are so impatient tonight." She said to him quietly. She leaned against the back of the booth now. With her hair free, most of it seemed to fall over her shoulders, highlighted by the dull light and she seemed to prefer the shadows that night. She had been tired. She was tired. She smiled at him as he waved down a waitress and she gestured of course for him to go first. By all means, really. His attitude would have let her let him go - because she cared not for his wrath. No, his wrath would have her full of bullet holes. The thunder rolled, the heavy storm clouds had finally rolled in and the thunder shook the building - vibrating heavily around them in such a force that it caused a lull in conversation. And she just tried to stifle a yawn and had come, in truth, for the dessert. For the fact that a couple days had passed and she had drained the blood packs she had on standby and craved something a little more sweet.
Xavier Darnai: "I'm impatient most nights." Smirking a bit as the woman came to the table, he took another hit off his cigarette, exhaling slowly as he reached for the tray at the back end of the table. "Balvanie Double Wood for me, glass at a time, I'm pacing myself." There was a level of pleasantry in his voice as he spoke to the woman, no more than usual, but more than had been present a moment ago. It was as though he had flipped a switch, putting on a mask for the diner staff; it was not the first time he had performed this trick, his accent dropping suddenly in the privacy of his flat being the first. "I'll be passing on food for the moment, but the lady may want dessert. She likes her sweet'n savory."
Obvious Illusion: "Cheesecake and coffee, please." She said quietly to the waitress that didn't even bother taking out her pad. No, she just gave a smile and continued on, off to do her duty and gather the items requested. She drew her dual colored eyes back to the man, watching him in the privacy of the booth and yet somehow allowing herself to melt into the comfort of the cushions against her bottom and back. She took her time, affording him the silence he needed to attempt to unwind and either tell her about the story or to at least give her an abridged version. If he choice neither, she would not push. She knew all too well what it was like to harbor secrets and the pain and frustration that went along with them. So quietly, she managed to play with her napkin's corner, touching the softness of the seam there. Where they both could tackle masks, Reader seemed to let the strain of the days gone by go and the darkness underneath her eyes increased as a little bit of energy was conserved for letting some effects of Glamour go.
Xavier Darnai: An air of silence went by for a few moments as he took several hits of the cigarette before finally snuffing it out in the tray and looking to her. His elbow rest on the table, and his chin in his right hand with fingers curling up to frame his face a bit. "I used to work for a group whose job it was to deal with threats propagated by people who're the sort that go bump in the night." His brows were raised as he stared at the table for the moment, fully aware of the irony behind his prior arrangements. "They dealt with all sorts, a good portion've which're best left secrets that no sane man should be responsible for. I gave them a good bit've time, and had to work with some people it'd've been better if I hadn't, to be honest. Made a few allies, more enemies." Allies, not friends. The word seemed very specifically chosen. "Managed to convince a few've'em that I was an upright citizen, so that's not so bad as covers go..."
Obvious Illusion: She watched him as he spoke. She watched the curve of his mouth, the pronunciation of his tongue. Reader watched his face as he spoke, looking for lies or truths undiscovered. He was a master, after all. It was his art and his craft. She would never deny a man his true calling. She feared, that perhaps that once was her problem. She never asked enough. She never demanded enough. She never expected enough from the way some functioned in the world. It was not all rainbows and sunshine after all. All she did was nod. It was his story to tell. It didn't warrant her interruption. She stayed respectfully quiet as the bruising and redness to her hands became a little more evident. Granted, just the one was upon the table, teasing the gathering of silverware wrapped up in the expensive napkin.
Xavier Darnai: "After a bit with them, worked my way through some ranks, ended up in charge've most've their security measures. Ended up with even more secrets I shouldn't've been trusted with in the first place. To be honest that'd been the downfall for both've us, agency and man." Taking a slow breath, he paused as the waitress came by with his glass, setting it on the table along with the cup of coffee and a plate of cheesecake. As she made her way off again, eyes followed the woman for a moment, aware she was out of earshot before he continued. "I ended up losing contact with someone for a while, decided to go and look into it myself. Things got complicated, and afterwards I'd proven a security risk for the organization." Freshly bandaged fingers wrapped around the rim of the glass, lifting it as he gave a slow stir, pulling it up for a sniff before taking a long sip. His eyes closed as he thought for a moment, lowering the glass again before his eyes opened, glancing across the table at her.
